ABOUT HER WORK
CSEdWeek is held every year in recognition of the birthday of Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). Grace Murray Hopper (1906-1992) was a groundbreaking computer scientist and naval officer, best known for her pioneering contributions to computer programming. After earning a Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale, she joined the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II and worked on the Harvard Mark I, one of the earliest electromechanical computers. Following the war, she remained active in the computer industry, developing the first compiler and playing a key role in the creation of COBOL, a programming language that revolutionized business computing. Hopper's efforts made computers more accessible, especially to non-engineers, and she was instrumental in promoting user-friendly programming languages. She served in the Navy until the age of 79, becoming the oldest active-duty officer, and later worked as a consultant and educator. Hopper received numerous honors, including the National Medal of Technology and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and her legacy continues to influence modern computing.
